Governor Okpebholo Pledges Compensation for Victims of Obaseki’s Property Demolitions
The Edo State Government has assured individuals and corporate organizations whose lands and properties were unlawfully destroyed or acquired under the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki that they will be duly compensated.
In addition to compensation, the government has also promised to return all illegally confiscated landed properties to their rightful owners.
Dr. Samson Osagie, the state’s Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, made this announcement on Monday during a thank-you party held for the people of Uhunmwonde Local Government Area. The event was organized to express gratitude for their support of Governor Monday Okpebholo in the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
Speaking at the event, Osagie acknowledged that the immediate past government had unlawfully acquired community lands and properties without offering compensation to the affected parties.
“I want to assure those whose lands or properties were illegally taken or destroyed that the present government, led by Senator Monday Okpebholo, will ensure they are compensated,” Osagie stated.

He emphasized that Governor Okpebholo’s administration is committed to addressing the injustices of the past to foster harmony across the state.
“There are many Edo citizens who have worked hard and invested in the state, only to have their properties forcefully taken without compensation. This administration will ensure that these properties are either returned to their rightful owners or compensated for accordingly. No victim will be ignored,” he added.
Osagie further reassured residents that every Edo citizen will receive justice, noting that the government will act responsibly while addressing outstanding issues of land and property ownership.
The Commissioner also highlighted the proactive approach of the Ministry of Justice in managing lawsuits that could hinder the government’s focus.
“My ministry will provide legal counsel to the governor to ensure governance is humane, with no room for oppression or victimization in the state,” Osagie stated.
The Edo State Government’s pledge signals its commitment to restoring trust and justice, while also creating a more harmonious and equitable environment for its citizens.
