Buhari Urges Quantity Surveyors to Address Construction Sector Challenges

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called upon the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) to harness the expertise of building sector professionals to tackle the challenges plaguing the construction industry.

During a recent courtesy visit by the 27th President of NIQS, Mr. Kene Nzekwe, at his residence in Katsina, Buhari commended the Institute’s efforts in promoting transparency in construction projects. He emphasized the crucial role of quantity surveyors in project cost administration, citing their competence and value.

Expressing appreciation for NIQS’s recommendation of quantity surveyors in key government roles, Buhari highlighted the appointments of late Ahmad Salhijo as Lead Consultant on defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) projects and Mamman Ahmadu as Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

Buhari underscored the importance of professionalism in the building and infrastructure sectors, stating that adherence to professional standards could alleviate many industry challenges. He encouraged quantity surveyors to maintain focus and commitment to ensure projects are executed within budget, time, and quality constraints.

Assuring the NIQS President of his support for the Institute, Buhari acknowledged the pivotal role of quantity surveyors in cost management for building and infrastructure projects, promising to assist in any way possible.

In his remarks, Mr. Nzekwe lauded Buhari’s past support for the profession, noting the former President’s advocacy for quantity surveyors during his tenure at the PTF and as Chairman of the defunct organization. He highlighted Buhari’s instrumental role in appointing quantity surveyors as lead consultants on various projects, which contributed to their success.

Nzekwe emphasized the evolving challenges and opportunities facing the profession, expressing confidence in overcoming obstacles with Buhari’s continued advocacy and support.
