FG Directs Removal of Speed Bumps on Major Roads Nationwide to Enhance Traffic Flow

The Federal Government has issued a directive to dismantle speed bumps across major roads in Nigeria to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

This decision was announced by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a two-day retreat for the Federal Ministry of Works’ Highway Engineers and Managerial Staff in Abuja. He highlighted that many speed bumps were poorly designed and placed haphazardly, contributing to accidents and unnecessary delays on the roads.

Umahi shared a personal experience of traveling on a federal route where a journey that should have taken an hour stretched to three hours due to frequent speed bumps.

“Although there is nothing wrong with speed bumps in certain designated locations, they must adhere to approved technical designs. Speed bumps should be strategically located to ensure they serve their purpose of road safety without causing undue delays,” Umahi stated.

The Minister explained that the National Assembly has directed the dismantling of these speed bumps, especially those that do not meet technical standards.

Future speed bumps, Umahi emphasized, will need to meet strict technical requirements, be placed in safe locations, and feature proper warning signs. Any future construction of speed bumps will require applications for location approval, ensuring compliance with technical standards and a minimum safe distance of 100 meters.

Bello Goronyo, the Minister of State for Works, commended the government’s infrastructure efforts, stating that improved roads are crucial for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.

Meanwhile, Olufunso Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, referred to Federal Road Safety Corps data, which revealed that less than 10% of accidents occur due to poor road conditions. He urged engineers to consider factors such as reckless driving and non-compliance with regulations when addressing road safety.

The government’s initiative aims to enhance road infrastructure, improve traffic management, and contribute to economic development in Nigeria.
